Suggestions for Mechanical Translation*

چکیده
IN OUR opinion, linguists and engineers who have so far turned their attention to mechanical translation have been delayed by the lack of a workable description of the operations which men perform on translating. That description still seems elusive. We believe the philosophical tradition is against it; and lay people as well as scientists and linguists conform to that tradition whenever interpreting and describing human activities relevant to thought, language and knowledge. For this reason we believe that the research going on in the Italian Operational School will be of some use in this connexion. This research is carried on mainly with the view to constructing an apparatus which performs some of our mental operations and gives them verbal expression. This programme requires that the philosophical tradition be reconsidered and that we adopt some new views and results.

Some Methods of Mechanized Translation
The following outline summarizes some suggestions about ways in which translation may be mechanized that were worked out by the authors in 19481952. The treatment is not exhaustive, and many modifications in detail would certainly be necessary should the ideas here mooted be put into active operation. It is considered, however, that it would be serviceable to describe the techniques here envisa...
متن کاملLightweight Word-Level Confidence Estimation for Neural Interactive Translation Prediction
In neural interactive translation prediction, a system provides translation suggestions (“auto-complete” functionality) for human translators. These translation suggestions may be rejected by the translator in predictable ways; being able to estimate confidence in the quality of translation suggestions could be useful in providing additional information for users of the system. We show that a v...
متن کاملThe first MT patents
Today machine translation means using a computer to translate natural languages. But it was not always so. The first suggestions that languages could be translated mechanically were made before electronic digital computers were even dreamt of. While the real history of MT began in March 1947 with correspondence between Warren Weaver and Norbert Wiener and with tentative discussions between Weav...
متن کاملAppraisal Theory in Translation Studies: An Introduction and Review of Studies of Evaluation in Translation
Translation studies (TS), as a young (inter)discipline, has partly relied on metadiscussions, critical assessments of its literature, and compilation of bibliographies to deal with certain problems of its youth, such as polarity and fragmentation. While the current status of TS shows general maturity, there are still young areas of inquiry in the discipline that are faced with similar issues. T...
متن کاملBlack-box integration of heterogeneous bilingual resources into an interactive translation system
The objective of interactive translation prediction (ITP) is to assist human translators in the translation of texts by making context-based computer-generated suggestions as they type. Most of the ITP systems in literature are strongly coupled with a statistical machine translation system that is conveniently adapted to provide the suggestions. In this paper, however, we propose a resource-agn...
